CG 500 Alginate impression powder

Technical information
To make casting of a hand or arm stump.

1. Mix about 4 parts of water with 1 part of CG 500 Alginate in a casting container of appropriate size. Whisk for about 15 seconds.
2. Immerse the hand or arm stump in the casting compound. Setting time: about 5 minutes.
3. Carefully draw out the hand or arm stump. Fill the negative with plaster. Clamp a reinforcing bar in the stand, and immerse the bar in the plaster.
4. The casting container is conically shaped to facilitate drawing out the alginate with the plaster. After doing this, remove the alginate and the plaster positive is ready.

Reproducing a socket.
1. Clamp the socket to be reproduced in the stand. Then place a casting cone of appropriate size in the centre of the socket about 5 cm from the bottom and clamp it in the stand.
2. Mix about 3 parts of water with 1 part of CG 500 Alginate in a casting container. Whisk for about 15 seconds.
3. Pour the casting compound into the socket. Setting time about 5 minutes.
4. Carefully withdraw the alginate and clamp the handle of the casting cone in a vice. You now have an exact casting of the socket.
5. Apply plaster bandages to the aginate positive in the same way as to a normal stump.

N.B. The alginate gives off water and this causes shrinkage. The plaster must therefore be poured into the negative or the plaster bandages be applied to the positive within 30 minutes. If there is not enough time for this, the alginate must be immersed in water to prevent shrinkage.
